Will Bates
Award winning composer and producer Will Bates began his musical career in his hometown of London as a jazz saxophonist. By the time he went to University to study music he had played with Paul McCartney, Marc Almond, Lulu and Steve Hackett.
Will turned his talents to production and released several singles on London based House and Drum n’Bass labels appearing alongside Ashley Beadle, Marshall Jefferson and Roy Ayers.
In 2003 Will began a solo project as a singer-song writer culminating in a tour with Morcheeba. His work attracted the attention of Mike Rutherford, who then hired Will to produce the Mike and the Mechanics album ‘Rewired’. As well as writing a couple of songs featured on the album. He also produced and edited two videos for the record.
Once settled in Brooklyn, he started The Rinse, an indie rock dance band, in which Will was the lead singer composer and producer. They shared the stage with Maroon 5, We Are Scientists, toured with Electric Six and released an album in Japan.
Will won the Gold Lion at Cannes 2008 and the Gold Clio 2009 for best original music.
As a film composer he has written for features including Ry Russo-Young’s ‘You Wont Miss Me’ which premiered at the 2009 Sundance film festival and Captain Brian Iglessias’ ‘Choisin’ documentary about the Korean War.
He has also composed scores for numerous shorts including Adam Thorpe’s ‘Clown V’s Strongman’, David Kaplan’s ‘Play’ and Noah Gershman’s ‘Tour Group’. In 2004 he wrote the Coca Cola anthem for the Turin Winter Olympics.
He has scored several fashion shows for London fashion week, continuing a creative partnership with London based menswear designer James Long
In 2008 Will started a new project called Fall On Your Sword. A Sci-fi influenced tech rock audio visual experience, Fall On Your Sword has become something of an internet phenomenon following the viral YouTube success of his video ‘Shatner Of The Mount’. Phil Mossman now joins Will onstage at shows as the group’s lead singer and guitarist playing regularly around New York City and the odd east coast tour.
Will also has a band with Electric Six frontman Dick Valentine called Evil Cowards, the debut album ‘Covered In Gas’ was released in the summer of 2009 on Metropolis Records.
In his spare time he plays Baritone sax in Brooklyn based punk band ‘Wild Yaks’ whose debut album Will also produced.
